Bonded Labours

The Director of HEAL was appointed as the District Coordinator for the Enumeration of Bonded Labour in the year 1997.  In the same year HEAL identified five families as bonded labourers consisting of twelve adults and five children from Maramalai tea and pepper estate in Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu State. The families was released and rehabilitated with the help of the District Administration by HEAL.

In 1997 we identified two children who were treated as bonded labourers in Kannur District, Kerala State. This was brought to the notice of the Kannur District Administration by the Kanyakumari District Administration. The children were released and enrolled with the mainstream education system.

In 2008, the enumeration of Bonded Labour was again conducted in various sectors like Coir, Fishing, Quarry & Brick Industries, Estate, Plantation, Agriculture, Hotels and Fishing by ten NGOs in Kanyakumari District under the Co-ordination of HEAL Movement. But no Bonded Labourers were identified in any sectors in Kanyakumari District.
